Justin Ripley, Mediator

J. Justin Ripley brings to your mediation the mature judgment and insight gathered during a distinguished 30 year professional career, and a life of personal experiences conservatively described as rich and varied. Born in Kotzebue, Alaska he was raised in several Bering seacoast and southeast Alaskan communities, graduating from High School in Sitka in 1952. He has traveled considerably -- most recently to Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Greece and Ireland.

Upon graduation from Gonzaga University, he was commissioned in the U. S. Army, Branch Armor, Aviation, serving from January 1957 to October 1960. Returning from active duty, he continued to serve in the Washington and then Alaska National Guard, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Military flying led to civilian aviation, where he earned a variety of fixed wing and helicopter ratings in the U.S. and Canada. Total time, military and civilian, 2750 hours.

J. Justin Ripley was law clerk for the Hon. John Dimond of the Alaska Supreme Court upon graduation from Gonzaga Law, and served thereafter in various assignments on the staff of the Attorney General in Juneau and the District Attorney in Anchorage, where he was appointed First Deputy D.A., before he was selected for the State Superior Court at Anchorage in 1975. As lawyer and judge, his duties took him from Ketchikan to Dutch Harbor to Nome, and to virtually every court location between. He retired from the bench in 1993.

Although recently he has reduced his organizational memberships, J. Justin Ripley remains affiliated with several alternative dispute resolution organizations, including The Association for Conflict Resolution, and The American Bar Association -- Dispute Resolution Section, and the Forum on Construction.

J. Justin Ripley has participated in hundreds of hours of Alternative Dispute Resolution Training, both as an attendee and as a presenter. He has attended training presented by The National Judicial College; The Alaska Judicial Conference; The Alaska Bar Association; The Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia; The American Society for Law, Medicine and Ethics; The American Law Institute-American Bar Association; The Christian Legal Society of Metropolitan Denver; The American Bar Association and Canadian Bar Association Construction Law Forum; The University of Washington Law School Foundation; The Washington State Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section; The American Arbitration Association, and The National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc., (Regulation Division). He presented lectures and interactive training to classes conducted under the auspices of The Alaska Bar Association; The Anchorage Bar Association; The Anchorage Association of Women Lawyers; The Alaska Judicial Conference; The Anchorage Legal Secretary’s Association; The Southeast Alaska Judicial Training Conference; Gonzaga University School of Law, Spokane, Washington; Alaska Pacific University; University of Alaska; and Charter College, all of Anchorage, Alaska.

From 1986 to 1993, then Judge Ripley, seeking a "better way", decided to conduct settlement conferences in all civil cases assigned to him. The success of that experience led him into private dispute resolutions upon his retirement. For several years he continued to mediate over 100 cases annually, although since 2005 he has devoted more time to family and leisure activities, as well as other interests.

With more than 1,800 judicial settlement conferences, arbitrations, and private mediations behind him, and with a success rate presently exceeding 95%, J. Justin Ripley is more convinced than ever that the Alternative Dispute Resolution process is the least expensive, least fatiguing, most humane and most expeditious way to bring virtually every interpersonal dispute to a Just Resolution.
